More on Unemployment and Vacancy Fluctuations

چکیده

More on Unemployment and Vacancy Fluctuations Shimer (2005a) argues that the Mortensen-Pissarides equilibrium search model of unemployment grossly under predicts the size of the response in the job finding rate to a productivity shock. Some of the recent papers inspired by his critique are reviewed and commented on here. Specifically, I suggest that the problem is not procyclicality of the wage, as Shimer, Hall (2005), and Hall and Milgrom (2005) argue, or a failure to account fully for the opportunity cost of employment, as Hagedorn and Manovskii (2005) contend. Instead, I show that a properly calibrated variant of the model, one that accounts for capital cost, counter cyclic involuntary separations, and the large flow of workers from job-to-job, can explain the observed volatility of the job finding rate. Labor-market Volatility in Matching Models with Endogenous Separations∗

The business-cycle behavior of a matching model with endogenous separations is studied in this paper. We show that whether aggregate productivity shocks have a larger effect on the vacancy–unemployment ratio than in a model with exogenous separations depends on whether worker productivity stochastically increases with tenure. The difference in the response is quantitatively small, however. We a...

Financial Factors and Labor Market Fluctuations (Preliminary)

What are the effects of financial market imperfections on the fluctuations in unemployment and vacancies in the labor market? Standard DSGE models are silent about this since they have not modeled unemployment directly. In this paper I augment a standard monetary DSGE model with explicit financial and labor market frictions. The financial frictions are modeled as Bernanke, Gertler and Gilchrist...

The Cyclical Behavior of Equilibrium Unemployment and Vacancies: Evidence and Theory∗

This paper argues that a broad class of search models cannot generate the observed business-cycle-frequency fluctuations in unemployment and job vacancies in response to shocks of a plausible magnitude. In the U.S., the vacancy-unemployment ratio is 20 times as volatile as average labor productivity, while under weak assumptions, search models predict that the vacancy-unemployment ratio and lab...

Cyclical Behavior of Unemployment and Job Vacancies in Japan

This paper studies whether the Mortensen and Pissarides (MP) search and matching model can explain the observed labor market fluctuations in Japan. Although the MP model correctly predicts the observed regularities in the cyclical fluctuations of unemployment and job vacancies, it cannot generate the observed unemployment and vacancy fluctuations in response to productivity shock of reasonable ...

Working Capital Requirement and the Unemployment Volatility Puzzle

Shimer (2005) argues that a search and matching model of the labor market in which wage is determined by Nash bargaining cannot generate the observed volatility in unemployment and vacancy in response to reasonable labor productivity shocks. This paper examines how incorporating monopolistically competitive firms with a working capital requirement (in which firms borrow funds to pay their wage ...
